Councilman Tyler D. Bailey

Tyler Bailey is a Civil Rights Lawyer and community advocate whose life work is serving people and standing up for justice and accountability no matter how big or powerful the competing interest.

For Councilman Bailey, running for Columbia City Council At-Large was personal. It provided an opportunity to help Columbia reach its full potential, as the capital city, by tackling the hard problems impacting the city and to serve the community that has directly enriched his life.

Columbia is Bailey’s home. His ties to Columbia span playing basketball in various recreation centers throughout the city as a kid, to attending the church his parents founded nearly 30 years ago on Broad River Road.

Councilman Bailey is committed to seeing every neighborhood in Columbia thrive. He is focused on addressing infrastructure and housing needs and supporting businesses in order to create strong economic growth.

Bailey is the founder and managing attorney at Bailey Law Firm, L.L.C.  In this position, Bailey manages the business operations at Bailey Law Firm, and represents its clients throughout South Carolina primarily in the areas of Civil Rights, Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation, and Civil Litigation with an emphasis on civil actions on behalf of crime victims.

A proud two-time HBCU graduate of Hampton University and Southern University Law Center, he has quickly become recognized as a rising star in the legal profession.  Bailey sits on the Board of Governors for the South Carolina Association for Justice, American Association for Justice, and the Advisory Board for the National Crime Victims Bar Association.  Bailey has been named one of the Top 40 Under 40 Trial Lawyers in South Carolina by both the National Trial Lawyers Organization, and the National Black Trial Lawyers.  Additionally, Bailey was named one of the Best and Brightest 35 and Under by the Columbia Business Monthly Magazine and Top 20 Under 40 by The State Newspaper.

Councilman Bailey dedicates countless hours serving his community through non-profit board service and various civic endeavors.  He was previously appointed on the City of Columbia Election Commission to serve as a commissioner, and his board service has included being Chairman for both the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council and One Columbia for Arts and Culture while also serving on the Boards of Sistercare, Vital Connections of the Midlands, and the Wiley Kennedy Foundation.

Bailey comes from a large family and was raised by parents who are devoted pastors and have dedicated their lives to serving others. Columbia is Bailey’s home, and the man he is today is due largely in part to the character that was developed as a result of his experiences in this community.

Of all of Tyler’s roles, he cherishes most his role as a husband to his wife Attorney Allyce Bailey, and father to his two sons, Tyler, Jr. and David Christian.

Councilman Bailey lives in the Historic Elmwood Park Neighborhood with his family and when he is not busy he cherishes playing with his boys in Roy Lynch Park on slow Sunday afternoons.
